The No-Tech Lo-Tech Nasal Saline Spray

By Stanley Lang

When people go shopping for treatments for their nasal problems they encounter quite a few options. So many options it's hard to say which is the best. Some of these treatments are aimed at getting a saline nasal spray up the nose.

Clearly you need an effective nasal saline solution to be able to use it as a nasal spray. It's not complicated. The most common products simply put salt and water together although the concentrations may vary. Oh, but lest I forget, they tend to have preservatives in them too. Yes, sad to say, preservatives are there to keep the germs out. Most of the nasal sprays on the market have preservatives so it's a good chance that yours does too.

The average person might shrug their shoulders. "Big deal" they might say. I would like you to consider for a moment the concept that something that is strong enough to kill germs is being sprayed up your nose. You might think that's a good thing in that it'll kill the germs there too! Sorry to disappoint you but that's not a good way to get rid of the bad germs in your nose. Here's the straight scoop: preservatives irritate the cells in the lining of the nose. Surprised?

Not only do the store bought strategies have chemicals that are bad for the lining of the nose, they employ devices to get the saline "up there" that aren't as good as a "lo tech" approach. You will read in some places that sniffing saline nasal solution from the palm of your hand "doesn't work". Don't believe this opinion. They don't know what they are talking about.

Actually, sniffing a nasal saline solution from the hand is a very good way to get the equivalent of a saline nasal spray up the nose. I think it's the best way. In over 30 years of medical practice I see this as a very effective strategy--- when it's done right and with the right kind of home made nasal saline solution. I call this my "Lo tech, No tech" approach. If you're interested in this you can get the information on my blog.

So I want to summarize these points: if you combine the right ingredients to make a good saline nasal solution you can make this product free of preservatives and avoid all of those negatives. And you can deliver it to the nose in a very "Lo tech" approach using that most simple of "Lo tech" devices, the hand. (Actually Lo tech only in the sense of not made by people!!)---but make sure you learn how to do it the right way. - 32378
