5 Year Olds Tantrums - How You Should Respond

When children are younger we often excuse tantrums as an age of corporate behavior. But at the age of five, we think they should be over. Regardless, temper tantrums are not to be tolerated. That does not mean the child should immediately be punished for the tantrum. You will likely get better results by trying to understand what has caused this extreme emotional response. It could be a cry for attention, love, or a sign that your child needs help learning to cope with strong emotions.

You may need to spend some more time holding your child. You may want to consider giving them an area in the house that is near the activity of the household that is a calming place. Set aside a calm-seat or a calm-couch and let them know you are more than willing to join them there if they want you to. Your goal, is to give them a chance to learn how to deal with their emotions.

Find Out What Is Bothering Your Child

There could be many causes of tantrums in a child that is 5 years old or older. Normally at this stage, the typical responses of communication, frustration, and separation anxiety are no longer relevant. For your child, you need to advocate for him/her and do some work to determine what is causing tantrums.

Foods, Diets, and Allergies Can Cause Tantrums

You need to start keeping a journal of all of your childs tantrums. Whenever they have a tantrum, write down what they had eaten what they've had to drink, if they've been around pets, and anything else you can remember. The goal is to gather enough information to find a common cause.

Inspect the Data

Now that you have the data, you need to find that the trend. Review the data for a common thread between all the tantrums. He could be a food they ate. He could be animals they played with. It can be a number of things. So look closely, and realize that the tantrum may be caused by something around your child.
